D: Dude...
I'm one of those artsy type people who hang around at coffee and tea shops sometimes... Except I actually have a legitimate job which I get paid for, and my own apartment.
But i'm probably taking this too seriously, I understand what you mean about the stereotype. Because in some cases that is true XD
Yay for stupid fights! I enjoy "artsy" things. I play viola, not exactly what this person is talking about but it still falls within the "artsy" category. And no, not many artists are that smart. I for one am not.
Oh, hey. I'm quite the artsy person, I love coffee shops and I try my hardest not to fall into the day in-day out typical job. I'd rather be happy while sipping my cappuccino in my Urban Outfitters skirts than be miserable at a "real job."
I strongly disagree that "the goal of all disciplines is self-reflexivity". I find that is the stated goal of most literary types and rarely holds true in the world of hardcore math & science. Not to sound like an ass, but I'm an MIT student so I'm very familiar with the world of engineering, science, and finance and the stated goals in each respective case involve the self but only as a means to an end of making a intellectual contribution to that field.
some douche i know told me how his artsy, anti-work lifestyle makes him so much cooler than any "normal" person... and then i found out he lives in his parents basement.
In other words, artsy "jobs" are for people who can't make it in the real world, so they reduce themselves to painting and music and all other kinds of worthless bullshit.
8:13 you're what we have against artsy people.
I totally agree with the OP, and I am majoring in biochemistry not business. You're so much more intelligent than me? I would love to see you try to pass some of my classes.
I hate the people that say they hate judgmental people or people who stereotype when they do it themselves.
Arts are an important part of enjoying life and making a living and eating are an important part of, well, being alive and staying alive but you don't to stay alive unless there is something that you enjoy about it. so they are interdependent on each other
- - but i don't think that real artist go to coffee shops to be seen, as many fake ass bohemian does.
I think the OP means seeing all the artsy ppl and knowing they'll never have real jobs makes him/her want to get one and not live on his buddies' couches like they probably do.

Literature serves an important social function in our society, as does all art, and listening to artistic voices (literary, digital, performing, visual) is important because it increases social awareness. If literature/art is valueless, then why do you think freedom of speech is so important? Expression is powerful. People should value and use their voices. And, of course, their ears.
but then they'd have to sell out and they wouldn't have time to work on anything that's actually important. They'd be focusing on making someone else rich.
Let me correct the poster 2 above me: everything USEFUL you have was made by an engineer and it was made possible for you to purchase it through the power of business.
Way to be a douche. I would love to see any of you "educated" people attempt to do the things we do and work the hours we work, you wouldn't be able to do it. So, while I'm out earning a living while having a fantastic time and living my dream, you can go sit in your office and be a douche bag that goes no where in life. SUPPORT THE ARTS!
11:02 - You've just admitted that it is necessary for academics (and scientists) to consider the relevance of their research to humanity "as a means to an end" in order to make their contributions. That is self-reflexivity in a nutshell... If humanity (and thus humanities) is not important, then why bother studying science/making contributions at all?
I'm laughing because all these "educated" art people are misspelling everything in their little rants. Oh and they are just avoiding responsibility by saying they are trying to lead their own lives and not "conform".
5:21
you're a moron
if you art fucks had an acutal money making job, you'd have a nice studio apartment to work in instead of working in a fucking coffee shop
9:52 - so true. as an art student i'm usually working on projects until 3 or 4 in the morning and then going to class at 8.
(843) - or are you referring to theatre people? let me tell you, it's hard as hell to be a techie. i wanna see you try.
non-conforming is still conforming, though, isn't it? i understand the artsy fuck issue. they are /quite/ far up their asses but - so are corporate drones! solution: mix business with some art and art with business: harmony. problem solved. grey-area jerks are better than yelling assholes.
9:27 you're an idiot you said you were smart and intelligent in 2 seperate sentences, and why don't you go try to make some food look like a fucking Mona Lisa then.
Okay, what do you have against the artsy people? You're all conforming sheep and a bunch of assholes. You have no idea how much people with art related jobs work their asses off. They are so much more intelligent then you dip shits. You're all a bunch of sheep.
