"Patty" is not commonly used as a shortened version of Patrick (at least, I've never heard of it used in Ireland), sometimes "Pat" is used, but it's usually "Paddy" which comes from the Irish for Patrick - "Padraic". Also, us Irish are refered to around the world as "Paddies", so it makes more sense for it to be known as Paddy's day. And by God, it was a fine one this year!!
