  • Michigan has the longest freshwater coastline, Alaska has the longest overall coastline.

  • Oklahoma has approximately 11,611 miles of shoreline, slightly less than the estimated combined general (nontidal) coastline of the Atlantic, Gulf, Pacific, and Arctic Coasts (12,383 miles).

  • This was a trivia question a few nights ago. MICHIGAN wins... most people forget because all of its shores are lakes not ocean.

  • Michigan has the second longest coastline in the U.S. It's not included on most lists because they count seawater coastline, not interior freshwater. Michigan's total coastline is 3,288 miles, which is longer than second place, Florida.

  • Alaska has a coastline of 6640 miles. idiots. look it up ?

Submitted by Anonymous on May 5, 09 at 6:33pm
  • actually its minnesota fools, check it. over 20,000 lakes...

Submitted by Anonymous on May 4, 09 at 12:48pm
  • Maine is a fail. Alaska, Florida, and California all have significantly more coastline. Alaska FTW.

Submitted by Anonymous on May 4, 09 at 11:04am
  • coastlines are a perfect example of the impossibility of enumerating fractal geometric structures. pick a unit measure and go with it. the infoplease site used 30', so let's just assume somebody did the measuring for us and maine has the longest tidal shoreline.

  • i was the first to commenter, and i am not a college grad; still in school, but it's still michigan. the day i read this the first time, it just happened to be my "fun fact of the day" (yeah, they have an app for that) on my iphone. in apple i trust.

Submitted by Anonymous on May 12, 09 at 5:39am
  • it is totally and without a doubt Michigan. Michigan's coastline is more than the entire east coast of the united states. If you have forgotten its two peninsula's, so that means 6 total sides of coast line.

Submitted by Anonymous on May 5, 09 at 7:26pm
  • 1. alaska 2. florida 3. california 4. hawaii 5. lousiana michigan??? really???? lol but this would totally be an argument i'd get in and i would have said california if i hadn't looked it up.

Submitted by Anonymous on May 4, 09 at 11:03am
  • The answer is michigan. Go pens

Submitted by Anonymous on May 4, 09 at 3:51am
  • "If all states with a coast were included, Michigan would rank second with 3,224 miles (5,189 km) of coast." -wikipedia P.S. I hope Andre is not a college grad.

  • Maine: 228 miles of general coastline and 3,478 miles of tidal shoreline. Alaska: 1,060 miles of general coastline and 2,521 miles of tidal shoreline. So take your pick. (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0001801.html by the way)

Submitted by Anonymous on May 4, 09 at 10:28am
  • It is totally and without a doubt NOT Michigan. Minnesota has 90,000 miles of shoreline, which is more than California, Hawaii, and Florida combined. You know, on account of the 10,000 lakes.

Submitted by Anonymous on May 6, 09 at 12:41am
  • I hope the person that said Michigan is not a College Grad. That would be a real shame!!!!GO ALASKA!!! Hosers.

Submitted by Anonymous on May 4, 09 at 4:39am
  • Minnesota actually has the most shoreline of any state, and it's all from lakes! I would have never guessed it, but it's true!

Submitted by Anonymous on May 5, 09 at 4:30pm

  • You're all fucking idiots. Alaska is the largest state in the United States. It also has the largest coastline, since there are 10 million fucking chain islands. Don't forget about those, morons.

  • RE: Anon at 7:28... that's not consistent with the source cited... http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0001801.html "Alaska: 1,060 miles of general coastline and 2,521 miles of tidal shoreline." Those are the numbers for the ARCTIC OCEAN coast. Alaska also has 5,580 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline (and 31,383 miles of Pacific tidal shoreline). State of Michigan claims 3288 miles of lake coastline: http://www.michigan.gov/deq/0,1607,7-135-3313_3677-15959--,00.html Not even close.

  • Pick a state and you have a 2% chance of being right. So if I say Arizona or Wyoming, I have a 4% chance of being right.

  • Alaska has over 3 million lakes if you want to start including Minnesota. I'm not even exaggerating...the literally have 3 million+ lakes.

Submitted by Anonymous on Oct 15, 09 at 3:37am

Submitted by Anonymous on May 4, 09 at 4:49pm
  • Do you all really give a damn about a fucking coastline? DO YOU?!

Submitted by Anonymous on May 5, 09 at 12:47am
