  • its a significant find but they stated even if they managed to make it into a working cure the cost is so extraneous that at this point most people affected by cancer/HIV would not be able to afford the treatment. gene therapy and stem cell implantation isnt cheap by any means, and these bible beaters in congress and on the streets protesting science's progress arent helping matters either.

  • Sorta, they cured a leukemia patient and used marrow from a person who was naturally resistant to HIV (<1% of the worlds population) to replace the defective marrow. But you go ahead and rawdog it if you want, sounds like a great idea.

  • they did cure an actual person. the transfer was to cure his leukemia and it also cured his HIV

Submitted by almostwhite on Dec 15, 10 at 2:16pm
  • FAIL. The treatment he received was for leukemia. He had to go through intensive radiation, chemotherapy and then receive a bone marrow transplant. Hardly easy or cost effective. 1 in 3 people also die from this treatment. Keep wrapping it up, please.

  • Kaaate is right. The treatment wasn't really a surprise, it was surprising that he survived the process. However, it costs way to much, requires a matching donor WITH a rare genetic condition, and has a proven high death rate meaning a large portion of patients would die YEARS before they would have on HIV meds.

  • @persnach although Canada has great health care it is by no means free. New cancer treatments are quite costly, as well as the ability to stay in private quarters of a hospital while given them, and that since we are able to do some treatments free, resources are limited to mostly just capital cities. Therefore a lot of people have to travel, give up jobs and be away from or relocate their family. We have perks, but are very very far from perfect. Don't expect to see this treatment come available to Ca

  • Ok well it only worked bc te guy got a bone marrow transplant and the donor had a genetic resistance to the virus. So if you have leukemia and HIV and have a donor with the genetics then ur golden. Aahahahha

FOR FREE!! It's terrible that ur health care system has people DYING while people debate the COST of curing them.

  • The treatment kills 1/3 if patients. Too dangerous to make it a routine cure beside being expensive. And you need someone compatible with a rare gene mutation...
