  • Why are there flotation devices under plane seats instead of parachutes? Is that some kind of sick joke? Just a thought.

    • Because a parachute requires specialized training to use, because you're unlikely to evacuate a commercial aircraft in time for all the passengers to use parachutes to escape, and because if an incident occurs at an altitude where parachutes would be useful you're fucked if the crew can't recover from it anyway.
